A Dream of a Lifetime
John and Jackie want to share their love of horses with you, the beginning, the process, and their dreams for the future.
After almost 20 of marriage and suburban Maryland living, a move was necessitated by a job change and we found ourselves living on sixteen acres in upstate New York. The acreage came complete with an 1860’s farmhouse and a barn, with someone’s old tack. To a 10-year-old girl, it was a dream come true, and very soon we heard the question, “Daddy can I get a horse?” And so our new life began…
…John had grown up in suburban Washington D.C. with nothing bigger than a Beagle. Jackie had grown up with horses and graduated from Penn State with a degree in Animal Science, so she had a realistic idea about the time and work involved in horses. But a little girl’s plea for a horse touched a tender spot in both hearts and three years later we found ourselves in search of the perfect (and affordable) horse…
Cocoa (Lee Shines Eternal), an 18 year old, registered Quarter Horse mare, came home to live with us in upstate New York in September of 1999, and thus began our love affair with horses. She was old enough to be wise, spry enough for the bravest rider, and she taught us much of what we know about horses. She was used for 4-H equitation and pleasure, as well as barrel racing, trail riding and providing beginner lessons for many aspiring cowgirls before we lost her in the spring of 2007. She was a great companion, reliable mount, and perfect first horse for us. We miss her very much.
